An August in Reading

An August in Reading

Despite a very busy month, August was a good month for reading. I completed six books and two manga, and of those there was only one stinker in the bunch - a horror book that was beautifully written but is absolutely not for me.

Anyway, let's get into the details.

The highlight of the month had to be the walking memoir Things Become Other Things by Craig Mod. I picked it up on a whim because it was about walking, which is a subject I've been thinking about a lot more as of late. Once I got it I also learned it was about walking in Japan and I quickly fell down a rabbit hole. Beautiful photography, a unique perspective, and interesting ideas made this one go far too quickly.

On the fantasy side, I think my favorite read of the month was The Penitent by Robyn Abbott. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance reader copy, and though the book is slower paced, it really caught me at the right time, and I really enjoyed it. You can find my full review for it here.

The other books that I'd make mention of are the manga I've been reading. I was recommended them by (of all people) my daughter, and I'll admit I'm actually really enjoying these. The series is called Witch Hat Atelier, and it's really not my usual, but I like it. The intended audience is younger, but the art is detailed and gorgeous, the world interesting, and it's kept me hooked. It's the most YAish thing I've read in a while, but so far, I approve.

And I think that about does it for August! September has been great for reading thus far and I'm looking forward to sharing any gems I find in a few weeks!

Until then, take care.
